Athlete Profile - John Quayle

John Quayle – Multisport / Duathlete / Runner

Age: 41

What first drew you to your sport?

I came from a combat sports background and wanted something more sustainable long term.

What are you currently working towards?

Building consistency across 5k, 10k and 10-mile distances, with the aim of PB’ing at GSR, while enjoying the process and the team environment.

What helps you show up on the days motivation is low?

Routine and grounding. Training gives me a space to focus fully on myself. It’s the process and the journey that I really enjoy, not just the outcome.

How do you look after yourself alongside training?

Proper rest days — usually yoga or light movement — and switching off from training completely. Meditation and visualisation help, especially around racing.

What are you most proud of in your training or racing so far?

Completing my first triathlon (Outlaw Half – 5:35 hrs) as a non-swimmer. I was scared of the water and had to take small steps just to get into the pool. Facing that fear is what I’m most proud of, but overall I’m proud of all my achievements.

One piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out

Have fun and don’t take yourself too seriously.
